Jordanian Etiquette for foreigners



- In the Streets -

Women should wear something opaque that covers the shoulders, neck, arms, cleavage and legs. 
Preferentially something loosen.

- No public displays of affection between man and woman. 

- Women should avoid wet hair outside. 

- Don't take photos without permission, specially from women.

- Getting angry in public is unacceptable

- Learn to speak a few arabic sentences, It shows respect.

- Women should not talk loud or laugh loud


- Men should always walk in front of women and go first in a door. If a man let a woman go first, he may look to her behind, offending her.




- Visiting People in their house -

- Women should wear something opaque that covers the shoulders, neck, arms, cleavage and legs. 
Preferentially something  loosen.

- Ask if you need to remove your shoes. In some arabic houses the shoes stays at the entrance.

- Greet everybody individually, but first the elderly. Don't shake hands or kiss, unless they give the first step. Never use the left hand.  It is considered unclean and reserved for personal hygiene.

- Bring a gift, like arabic sweets pastries, or chocolates or flowers.

- If you are a man, don't speak with the women if you are not introduced.

- Don't make questions about the wife or daughters. 

- Keep your voice down.

- In some houses, women are in different rooms. Foreign women are treated as "honorary man", so they can stay in the same room the men are.

- If it's offered an arabic coffee or a black tea, accept. Is it rude to not accept. 

- Refuse 2 times a snack. If the host still insists for the third time, then accept. 
It is considered impolite to accept at the first offer. 

-  If you were invited for a meal, don't be surprised if they eat with their hands or spoons. Never use the left hand. It is considered unclean and reserved for personal hygiene.

- Avoid talking about the king and religion. Criticising the King or the religion is a criminal offence. Ask about their health, last events, etc.

- Don't overstay. Leave soon after eating.


- The host walk their guests to the door

- If you need to refuse a invitation, place your right hand over your heart and explain.
