What to visit in Jordan - Baptism site of Jesus Christ

One of the most important religious places in Jordan, is the Jordan river where Jesus was baptized by John, the Baptist, as described in the New Testament.
"Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan river to be baptized by John." (Matthew 2:13)

The Baptism site is located close to the Dead Sea and is a place of pilgrimage for christians around the world.
Jordan's river water is considered holy as Jesus was baptize here.

In the original place where Jesus was baptized is possible to see the byzantine chapels.

However, it is not possible to be baptized where Jesus was, as the river Jordan does not reach this place anymore.
The arab conflicts and the extensive infrastructural developments led to a dramatic drop in water level and to the deterioration in the water quality.

As it is not possible to immerse in water at the same place Jesus did, there's a close place where there is an access to the Jordan river.
The river where Jesus was baptized was a river full of cascades and rapids. Now is a muddy polluted stream. However, this place is still an important historical and religious place.

Across the entrance for the river is a church that was built for John the Baptist by the roman Emperor Anastacius.

It was closed.
