Al-Balad is a valley, located in the oldest area of Amman, known as Downtown.
Here, history is mixed with the busy markets and smells of the Jordanian culture.
Historical places
Amman once belonged to the Roman empire. Its name was Philadelphia. Here, can be found some well-preserved ruins of that times, like the Roman Amphitheater, a 6.000 seat 2nd century structure.
The entrance fees for non-Jordanian is 2JD and includes the entrance of the Museum of artefacts and popular costumes.
Markets and shops
It's a crowded and noisy traditional commercial area, where can be found typical restaurants, street food, traditional clothes, jewellery, arts and crafts, perfumes, souvenirs, food market, and many others things, for cheaper prices.
King Hussein Mosque
One of the oldest mosques and buildings in Amman.
Built in pink and white stone.
Non - Muslims are not allowed to visit inside.
Street Jabal al weibdeh
In these street, we can see some samples of the Jordanian street art.
Things to try:
- The fresh juices of sugar cane and the mint lemonade (around 0.75JD each);
- The Jordanians' favorite sweet - Knafeh, in Habibah (1,25 JD);
- Turkish Bath (around 25 JD);
- A light meal at the popular Hashem restaurant (around 5 JD for 2 people)
